Grote Markt

The Grote Markt is a large public square in Sint-Niklaas that serves as the city's main venue for outdoor gatherings and events. Historic buildings with impressive facades frame the open space, creating a defined perimeter for the area.

A weekly market has operated on this square for roughly 5 centuries, connecting today's commerce with medieval trading customs that shaped the city. This long continuity demonstrates how local commerce has anchored community life through the ages.

Each early September, the Vredefeesten festival transforms the square into a launch site where dozens of hot air balloons take flight. This colorful spectacle briefly turns the entire space into a floating gallery of balloons rising into the sky.
