State Archives in Louvain-la-Neuve

The State Archives in Louvain-la-Neuve is a six-story building with three basement levels that stores extensive document collections across multiple floors. The spaces are climate-controlled and provide reading areas for researchers who wish to access the holdings.

The institution emerged from the 1995 division of Brabant province into three separate administrative regions and opened after construction from 2005 to 2009. This new facility was able to centralize scattered records and make them available for research.

The archives preserve important records including parish registers and civil documents that offer insight into how the region developed. Visitors can search through these historical materials and understand how society was documented across generations.

Visitors must book their research visit at least two working days in advance before accessing the reading rooms. It is wise to check opening hours before visiting and allow plenty of time for your research work.

The archives hold 76,000 digitized maps and plans accessible through dedicated digital reading stations within the building. This collection allows visitors to track geographical and territorial changes across the region over centuries.
