Antoing Castle, Medieval castle in Antoing, Belgium
Description
Antoing Castle is a stone fortress on the right bank of the Scheldt River, featuring tall towers and 19th-century Gothic Revival architectural details. The building combines earlier masonry with later additions that create a commanding presence along the riverbank.
History
The original wooden structure from the tenth century was replaced with stone fortifications in the twelfth century by the castellans of Antoing. The De Melun family later took control and received powerful visitors including the Burgundian dukes during the fifteenth century.
Culture
The castle belongs to the De Ligne family, who have shaped its character through centuries of residence and stewardship. Today you can see how the family maintains it as a lived-in home while preserving its historical layers.
Practical
The castle remains a private residence and opens for guided visits only on specific dates that require advance arrangements. Plan ahead since casual visits are not possible without prior coordination with the owners.
Did you know?
From 1901 to 1914, the castle served as a Jesuit college where the future French president Charles de Gaulle received his education. This period as a school was brief but created an unusual link to major historical figures.
