Vierset Castle, Medieval castle in Modave, Belgium
Vierset Castle is a stone structure set on elevated ground above the Hoyoux river valley with Baroque architectural elements and extensive period furnishings. The interior rooms display furniture and decorations from various eras that reflect how former residents lived.
Construction began in 1090 and it belonged to the Barse family until passing to Wauthier de Beaufort in 1292 through inheritance. In the 20th century, Brussels water management company acquired it to protect water resources while preserving the building's heritage.
The castle hosts regular concerts and exhibitions that make it an active venue for artistic events throughout the year. Visitors can experience the rooms during these programs, connecting the building's past with contemporary cultural activities.
The castle can be visited from April through October with guided tours available in multiple languages upon reservation. It is best to book ahead so you can join an available tour and make the most of your visit.
The property was acquired in 1941 by a water supply company, showing a rare example of how industrial needs led to preserving a historical building. This unusual origin of its modern management makes it a place where environmental protection and heritage conservation converge.
