Vogelsanck Castle

Vogelsanck Castle is a three-winged castle situated on an island surrounded by water in Heusden-Zolder. Its iron sandstone walls feature a pronounced central tower, and the grounds hold approximately 150 tree species scattered throughout the estate.

The castle served as the administrative center for the Vogelsanck territory from 1308 to 1795, governing five villages that exist today as separate municipalities. The de Villenfagne family took control in 1741 and has maintained stewardship ever since.

The grounds feature an English garden and arboretum that visitors encounter while exploring the estate. These planted spaces shape how the place feels and show what leisure and nature meant to its owners over time.

The castle is privately owned and located north of the N72 road connecting Hasselt and Beringen, with the highway dividing the estate into two sections. Access to the grounds may be limited, so visitors should check conditions in advance.

The de Villenfagne family acquired this property in 1741 and has maintained ownership continuously, making it one of the region's longest-held family estates. This unbroken lineage of stewardship across many generations allowed the architecture and gardens to retain their original character.
