Croix des Fiancés

The Croix des Fiancés is a stone cross standing on the High Fens plateau in the Belgian Ardennes, marking where two travelers perished in harsh winter conditions. The structure rises from the moorland landscape, visible from the surrounding hiking paths that cross this elevated terrain.

The cross was erected as a memorial to events on January 22, 1871, when two travelers died in a snowstorm while crossing the High Fens. This marker became a lasting reminder of the dangers people faced in mountain regions during winter in that era.

The monument preserves the memory of two people whose lives were cut short in this remote mountain region. Visitors can sense how this place remains a personal and touching landmark in the local landscape.

The monument sits along marked hiking trails in the Hautes Fagnes Nature Reserve, accessible from parking near Baraque Michel. The exposed moorland terrain can be windy and wet, so sturdy footwear and appropriate clothing for changing weather are recommended.

A handwritten note was discovered with one of the bodies, containing a final message written in those desperate final hours. This personal document transformed the memorial from a simple historical marker into a deeply moving human story.
