Midi Fair, Traveling carnival on Boulevard du Midi, Brussels, Belgium
Midi Fair is a traveling carnival held each summer along Boulevard du Midi, between Porte de Hal and Porte d'Anderlecht in Brussels. Over 130 rides, game stalls, and food stands line the wide section of the boulevard, which is closed to regular traffic during the event.
The fair was founded in 1880, making it a summer fixture in Brussels for well over a century. Its location along Boulevard du Midi has stayed the same, even as the rides and stalls around it changed with each passing decade.
The fair draws visitors from across Brussels, who gather along the boulevard to share rides and Belgian fairground food like waffles and fries. It is one of the few occasions where people from so many different parts of the city naturally come together in the same space.
The fair runs from mid-July to late August, with different closing times on weekdays and weekends, so it is worth checking before you go. Entry to the fairgrounds is free and visitors can walk the full length of the boulevard and stop wherever they like.
Many of the stallholders and ride operators travel from other European countries each year and build everything from scratch on the boulevard. Some families have run the same stalls for several generations, returning to the same spot on Boulevard du Midi year after year.
