The Water Carrier, Bronze fountain in Saint-Gilles, Belgium
The Water Carrier is a bronze statue showing a young girl holding two water buckets, standing in a roundabout in Saint-Gilles. The sculpture measures about 126 centimeters tall and 68 centimeters wide.
The statue was created by Belgian sculptor Julien Dillens and unveiled in 1900 to celebrate the arrival of running water from the Bocq River. It marks an important moment in the city's infrastructure history.
The figure shows a water carrier, a job that was common before modern plumbing arrived. Today this sculpture reminds visitors of this work and how important these people were to the city.
The sculpture sits in a roundabout at the heart of Sint-Gillis and is easy to reach on foot. Nearby you will find bicycle parking and several restaurants around the area.
In 2017 the statue received its first costume, a shepherdess outfit matching one of the city's most beloved symbols. This gift was part of an annual celebration of the city.
