Ouren Castle, Medieval castle ruins in Ouren, Belgium.
Ouren Castle is a medieval fortified residence in Burg-Reuland standing on a shale outcrop that overlooks the Our river valley. The remaining foundation walls reveal the floor plans of residential buildings, defensive towers, and a chapel spanning multiple construction periods.
The castle was founded in the 11th century as a seat for a local noble family and underwent expansions and rebuilds over several centuries. It remained under family ownership until the French Revolution in 1794, after which the structures gradually deteriorated.
The ruins reveal how the nobility organized their household and which spaces mattered for everyday living. Visitors can observe how the structure evolved and adapted to the needs of its residents over time.
The site is open to visitors who can examine the foundations and wall remains up close. Information panels on location explain the archaeological work and help orient visitors through the different areas of the ruins.
Belgian researchers have systematically uncovered and documented different construction phases since 2012. This scientific work reveals how fortified structures in the region changed and modernized across generations.
