Provincial Domain Bergelen, Nature park and province domain in Wevelgem, Belgium
Provincial Domain Bergelen is a nature park covering 49 hectares with walking paths, a large artificial pond, and varied green spaces for outdoor recreation. The site features observation huts for bird watching, fishing areas, and separate routes designed for cyclists and horse riders.
This site developed around an artificial sand pit created in the 1970s during construction of the E403 motorway. Once sand extraction ceased, the excavated area was allowed to fill with water and eventually transformed into a protected natural space.
The Bulskamphoeve farmhouse within the grounds displays a horseshoe layout that speaks to its past as a working agricultural site. Visitors can observe this traditional Flemish farm structure and how the building is positioned to enclose its central courtyard.
This site is easily accessible with an extensive path network suited to different activities you might enjoy. Bird watchers should head to the observation huts, while anglers need a Flemish permit and cyclists or riders have their own dedicated routes throughout the grounds.
The Heulebeek stream flows through the grounds in its natural course, playing a key role in the ecological health of this protected landscape. This uncontrolled waterway stands out compared to many regulated streams found elsewhere in the surrounding region.
