Texture

Texture is a museum housed in a former flax storage building that displays the complete process of transforming flax fiber into textile materials. Multiple floors showcase industrial machinery, technical exhibits, and hands-on presentations that explain the various stages of production.

The site represents centuries of flax cultivation along the River Leie, which earned its name the Golden River because of the wealth generated by textile commerce. This river connection was essential for moving goods throughout the region and beyond.

The exhibits document how local farmers and factory workers developed and passed down their specialized skills that shaped the regional textile trade. Visitors can see the tools and techniques that became part of the community's identity.

The building is open during standard daytime hours and visitors can move freely through the different spaces to explore exhibits at their own pace. Interactive demonstrations happen regularly throughout the day, but there is also plenty of time to learn independently at any station.

The flax processed in this region contributes to the production of banknotes used worldwide, providing them with their distinctive texture and durability. Few visitors initially realize this hidden industrial connection that extends far beyond Europe.
