Artillerietoren, Medieval defense tower in Kortrijk, Belgium
The Artillerietoren is a red-brown brick tower standing beside the Church of Our Lady in Kortrijk's historic center. It rises three stories with thick walls designed for military defense.
The tower was built around 1300 under King Philip IV of France as part of the city's fortifications. Over time it was adapted to serve new military purposes as technology and warfare changed.
The name reflects its use as an artillery storage facility starting in the 15th century, marking its importance to the city's defense. Visitors walking around it today can feel the weight of these military functions in its solid brick construction.
To see the interior you need to arrange a guided tour in advance since the building is protected. From outside you can view the brick structure and its placement next to the church at any time.
Excavations in 1990 uncovered remains of an earlier fortification beneath the tower, along with old weapons and coins found in a well. These discoveries reveal how long this location served military purposes.
