Grote Markt, Central marketplace in Kortrijk, Belgium
The Grote Markt features a curved eastern side and contains a belfry tower at its center, surrounded by Gothic and Renaissance buildings.
The square emerged in 1899 after the demolition of the Old Cloth Hall, merging separate small markets for pottery, clothing, fruit, eggs, and dairy.
The central belfry, first mentioned in 1307, stands alongside a monument dedicated to those who lost their lives in World War I.
The square underwent renovations between 1999 and 2000, transforming it into a pedestrian zone with direct access to main shopping streets.
The square's shape reflects the location of the first count's castle that bordered it during the early medieval period.
