Castle de Bist, Neoclassical château in Kessel, Nijlen, Belgium

Kasteel de Bist stands in Kessel, Nijlen, behind a low stone balustrade at the water's edge. Its red-brick facade has tall windows framed in white stone, a lighter stone band between floors, a steep dark grey roof with dormer windows and a small pointed turret. The main building is neoclassical, with a neotraditional wing to the east.

A first written reference from the second half of the 18th century names Jan Robert de Hoves des Estiennes as owner of the Hof de Bist, 17 bunders (about 22 hectares) in size. In 1739 the estate passed to Domenicus Verhocht of Mechelen, who had the main building erected against the pond, dated 1743 on its south side. From 1828 the van der Smissen–van den Berghe family laid out the ponds and connecting canal; in 1854 the Lier–Turnhout railway cut the 40-hectare domain in two, and a halt was built at the castle as compensation.

The name Bist (or Biesth) first denoted a triangular enclosure where the Franks sheltered their livestock, and such biesten often grew into village cores; the hamlet de Bist in Kessel is recorded from 1717. Inside the tower, two coats of arms flank the monumental fireplace: that of the van den Berge family, with three sickles and three horns, and that of the Gamard family, with roosters above and below a chevron. A rooster carved into the tower facade also refers to the Gamard arms.

The estate lies in Kessel, now part of Nijlen, and the railway from Lier to Turnhout cut the former 40-hectare domain in two in 1854. The ponds and the connecting canal between the two eastern ponds, dug after 1828, still shape the grounds around the castle island. Look for the grotesque beech just before the bridge to the courtyard.
