Le Dragon de Knokke, Outdoor sculpture in Knokke-Heist, Belgium.
Le Dragon de Knokke is an outsized sculpture shaped like a dragon that serves as both a playhouse and an art object. The structure contains two levels with various spaces inside, including areas for play and living quarters.
The sculpture was created between 1973 and 1975 by French artist Niki de Saint Phalle for a Belgian family. Later, a renowned American artist added his own artistic contribution to the interior decoration.
The name comes from its long, dragon-like shape that dominates the landscape. Visitors experience a playful piece of art that blends into daily life as a functional space that was imagined as a child's personal world.
The site is located in a residential area and is easily reachable on foot if you are staying nearby. Visitors should note that access may be limited since this is a private artwork best viewed from the outside.
The project started without official permits and led to repeated police warnings before eventually gaining acceptance from authorities. This unplanned beginning makes the artwork's history as remarkable as its final form.
