Tank memorial

The Tank Memorial displays a German Tiger II tank positioned in front of a museum building on a street in La Gleize. The tank is heavily damaged and shows the effects of combat, while the adjoining museum contains displays of weapons and military equipment from the conflict.

The tank saw action during the fighting in the Ardennes campaign of 1944 and belonged to a German SS armored unit. It was abandoned afterward and remained at the location, where it now stands as evidence of that phase of the war.

The memorial honors those who died in the area during World War II, with inscriptions recognizing soldiers who fell in the fighting. Visitors can observe the tank wreck and read the names of local casualties commemorated on the site.

The memorial is visible from outside at any time since it sits on a public street and can be viewed without entering buildings. The neighboring museum has set opening hours that should be checked before visiting if you plan to see the indoor displays.

After the war, a local resident acquired the abandoned tank through an unusual barter, exchanging a bottle of cognac for the vehicle. This unexpected transaction led to the tank remaining on site and eventually becoming a formal memorial.
