Kasteel Calmont

Kasteel Calmont is a white plastered château in Ruien with service buildings and a coach house linked by an archway. The structures sit on a hill near Kluisberg and form a clustered arrangement of period buildings around a central yard.

The castle originally belonged to the Merode family before Jean-Pierre Behaghel, a French army officer, purchased it in 1813 and rebuilt it in Empire style. His reconstruction transformed the property and shaped its present form.

The grounds hold ancient burial mounds that visitors can observe today, telling the story of burial customs practiced here long ago.

The estate can be accessed from two points: a linden avenue from Knoktstraat or a secondary beech path. Both approaches offer different ways to explore the grounds and arrive at the buildings.

During World War II, German forces stored V1 rockets on the property, and when retreating in 1944 they detonated ammunition stocks, causing extensive damage to the buildings.
