Mattot House, Manor house on Frans Dewandre Boulevard, Charleroi, Belgium
Mattot House is a modern residential building on Frans Dewandre Boulevard featuring sandstone brick on its first two levels. A central staircase connects the medical consultation room on the ground floor to the living spaces above, while staggered facades create distinct front and rear elevations.
The house was built between 1937 and 1939 for Dr. Mattot, director of Reine Astrid Maternity Hospital. The second floor was enlarged in 1955.
The house blends modernist and Art Deco design, visible in how the stairwell is detailed and finished. This mix of styles shaped how the space looks and functions from the beginning.
The building is best viewed from the street to appreciate its sandstone facade and staggered design. Visit during daylight hours to see the brick details and facade composition clearly.
The second floor features sliding partitions inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, allowing flexible reconfiguration of the living space. This design made it possible to adapt the layout to different needs over time.
