Charleroi - Monument "A nos martyrs", War memorial in Charleroi, Belgium.
The Monument "A nos martyrs" in Charleroi is a neoclassical structure of white marble with Doric columns, topped by a bronze Victory statue. At its base stands a female bronze figure recording history and containing the names of the fallen.
The memorial was inaugurated on July 8, 1923, and lists 174 soldiers from Charleroi and surrounding areas who died during the world wars. Its original location at the Mountain Street intersection was moved to Waterloo Avenue in 1922.
The bronze figure at the base bears an inscription from Tacitus that commemorates those lost when the city endured the world wars. Visitors today can still read the names and messages that document this loss.
The memorial is located on Waterloo Avenue in Charleroi and is easily accessible from the street. Visitors should allow time to carefully read the inscriptions and details of the statues.
Architect Emile Devreux, who designed the memorial, served as mayor of Charleroi from 1904 to 1921 and protected the city during invasion. His dedication to the city is reflected in this work, which holds both artistic and political significance.
