Church of St Lambert

The Church of Saint Lambert is a house of worship along the Meuse River in Bouvignes-sur-Meuse, featuring a distinctive square tower that shapes the skyline of the region. Its walls display building elements from different periods, making its varied construction history clearly visible.

The building was founded in the 12th century and underwent multiple reconstructions, with Romanesque, Gothic, and Neogothic features being added progressively over time. These phases of rebuilding reflect changing architectural tastes across different eras.

The church holds a 16th-century carved altarpiece by Jean Leuthard depicting scenes of Christ's Passion, recognized as exceptional heritage of Wallonia. Visitors can still see this artwork displayed in its original religious setting today.

The site is best explored on foot and offers good views from the street outside; keep in mind it remains an active place of worship so access may depend on service times. Information and tours can be arranged through the Maison du Patrimoine médiéval mosan.

Inside stands a 17th-century brass eagle-shaped lectern that holds the Gospel book during services, combining practical function with decorative craft. This unusual piece draws attention through its distinctive animal form and ornamental detailing.
