Sofia Airport, International airport in Sofia Capital Municipality, Bulgaria
Sofia Airport is Bulgaria's main aviation facility and sits about 6 miles (10 km) east of the city center in the Vrazhdebna district. The facility comprises two passenger terminals, several runways, and cargo facilities, serving as a hub for domestic and European connections.
The airport began operations in 1930 and received official status in 1935 through a decree by Tsar Boris III. After World War II, the facility was gradually expanded and modernized to handle growing passenger numbers and international connections.
The airport bears the name of Vasil Levski, a 19th-century Bulgarian revolutionary hero. Travelers see his portrait and quotations in the entrance halls, making the country's national identity tangible.
The metro system offers the fastest connection from Terminal 2 to the center and runs roughly every ten minutes during the day. Those arriving late or carrying more luggage will find taxi stands with fixed fares into the city at the exit of both terminals.
A large maintenance hangar by Lufthansa Technik Sofia stands on the eastern edge of the airport grounds and employs hundreds of specialists. The hangar attracts aircraft from across Europe for servicing and has notably expanded Sofia's role in the aviation industry.
