Razgrad, Municipality seat in northeastern Bulgaria
Razgrad is a city in northeastern Bulgaria's Ludogorie region, situated in the valley of the Beli Lom river at about 270 meters elevation. The city serves as the administrative center for the region and features both historic monuments and modern residential areas.
The ancient Roman settlement of Abritus once stood at this location, and in 251 CE the city became the site of a major battle where Gothic forces defeated the Roman army. This conflict was a turning point in Rome's control of the eastern frontier.
The Ibrahim Pasha Mosque built in 1530 stands near the Orthodox St Nicholas Church, and both buildings shape the religious character of the city today. You can walk through neighborhoods where different faith communities have lived alongside each other for generations.
The city is best explored on foot once you arrive, with main monuments and neighborhoods within easy walking distance of each other. Spring and early autumn offer pleasant weather for walking around and observing daily life in town.
The local football club achieved an unusual run of thirteen consecutive championships between 2012 and 2024, bringing national attention to the city. This sporting success has become a major source of pride for residents and helped put the city on the map beyond Bulgaria.
