Eastern Rumelia, Ottoman autonomous province in Balkans, Bulgaria
Eastern Rumelia was an autonomous province of the Ottoman Empire, stretching between the Balkan Mountains, Rhodope Mountains, and Strandzha. Plovdiv served as its administrative center.
The province was established in 1878 through the Treaty of Berlin as an autonomous region within the Ottoman Empire. It unified with Bulgaria in 1885.
The region was linguistically diverse, with Bulgarian, Greek, and Ottoman Turkish spoken across different communities. This mix of languages shaped how people communicated and lived together in towns and villages.
The administration operated through local elected representatives and Christian Governor-Generals approved by the Ottoman government. This system allowed regional self-governance under Ottoman oversight.
The region issued its own postage stamps beginning in 1881, featuring text in four languages using Arabic, Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic scripts. These stamps reflect the multilingual nature of the society at that time.
