Forum of Philippopolis, Roman forum in Plovdiv, Bulgaria

The Forum of Philippopolis is a large Roman complex in central Plovdiv with a rectangular shape that held various public buildings and open spaces. The site features the remains of stone structures and underground channels designed to manage water flow throughout the area.

The complex was built gradually between the 1st and 2nd centuries as the Roman city developed and expanded. Multiple construction phases show how the design evolved to meet the growing needs of the urban population.

The site served as the social heart of the ancient city, where residents gathered for market days, public announcements, and celebrations. Visitors can still sense how different groups used different sections for commerce, entertainment, and spiritual gatherings.

The site connects to the main streets of Plovdiv at multiple entry points and is easily accessible from the city center. Wear sturdy shoes when visiting, as the terrain includes uneven stone surfaces and open excavation areas.

Excavations uncovered inscriptions describing gladiator combat events that took place in the arena, revealing the role of entertainment in daily life. An altar bearing religious symbols from multiple traditions shows how different beliefs coexisted in this shared space.
