Cathedral of St Louis, Catholic cathedral in central Plovdiv, Bulgaria.
The Cathedral of St Louis is a Catholic place of worship in central Plovdiv built in neoclassical style with brick walls. Two symmetrical bell towers rise above the structure, with large arched windows framing the main facade.
Construction began in the 1850s under the direction of Vicar Andrea Canova, with the building opening to worshippers in 1861. This period marked an unusual moment for Catholic presence in a region under Ottoman control.
The cathedral holds the first organ brought to Bulgaria, an instrument that shaped religious services and musical events from its arrival onwards. This contribution marked an important moment in the country's cultural development.
Visitors can enter during the week, though the building remains primarily a place of worship where services are held regularly. It is best to check opening times beforehand, as access may be limited during religious ceremonies.
Within the cathedral rests the sarcophagus of Maria Luisa of Bourbon-Parma, first wife of Tsar Ferdinand I, carved by Italian sculptor Tomaso Gentile. This burial connects a European royal figure to the spiritual life of the building.
