Eirene Residence, Ancient Roman residence in Plovdiv, Bulgaria
Eirene Residence is a Roman house from the 3rd century with rooms arranged around a peristyle courtyard, while service areas occupy the southern section. The entire complex spans approximately 668 square meters and displays the typical layout of a wealthy household from that era.
The building was constructed in the 3rd century and suffered damage from the Hun invasion of 441-442 AD, after which it underwent extensive repairs. These repairs show how residents restored the structure following wartime destruction.
The residence takes its name from the goddess Eirene, depicted in a mosaic within the main room, with Greek inscriptions welcoming guests throughout the different spaces. These inscriptions and images show how wealthy residents displayed their education and prosperity.
The site is located in the central part of Plovdiv and can be reached on foot or by public transport. It is best to wear comfortable shoes since the archaeological area has uneven ground and is partly uncovered.
The residence preserves about 160 square meters of colored mosaics featuring geometric patterns, floral motifs, and mythological figures from different construction periods. These mosaics partly originate from different eras and reveal how artistic tastes evolved across generations.
