Bishop's Basilica of Philippopolis, Early Christian basilica museum in Plovdiv, Bulgaria

The Bishop's Basilica of Philippopolis is an early Christian church in Plovdiv with two layers of mosaic floors that extend across large areas, showing geometric patterns and bird depictions. The interior is now arranged as a museum where you can study these artistic mosaics, the building's original layout, and structural remains.

The building was constructed in the middle of the 4th century and served as an active church for several generations until the end of the 6th century. After that time it was converted into a burial ground and its role as a place of worship came to an end.

The name comes from the bishop who once led this community, and the floor mosaics show how people valued craftsmanship and beautiful patterns in their sacred spaces. You can see geometric designs and bird motifs throughout, reflecting the artistic skills of the period.

The site is located on the grounds of a modern museum and can be visited during regular opening hours. You should wear comfortable shoes since you walk over uneven archaeological remains and mosaic surfaces.

The structure was designed with two different floor levels, showing archaeologists that the site layout and building methods were carefully adapted to the local terrain. Such thoughtful planning was uncommon in the region at that time and suggests the builders had skilled expertise.
