Rozhen Monastery, Orthodox monastery in Pirin Mountains, Bulgaria
Rozhen Monastery is an Orthodox complex in the Pirin Mountains of southwestern Bulgaria, situated between the villages of Melnik and Rozhen. The buildings form a hexagonal layout with residential wings, utility spaces, and the Nativity Church in the center of the courtyard.
A benefactor established the complex in 1201 and developed it into a spiritual center for the region. The main church and southern wing were built in the 16th century under Bulgarian sponsorship, after the monastery gained influence.
The name comes from an old word for strawberry plantations that once covered the hillsides. Monks still tend vineyards and gardens within the walls, just as they have for centuries.
The path from Melnik passes through vineyards and takes about an hour on foot, or you can arrange a short vehicle transfer. Tours show the church interior and monastery gallery, with modest clothing expected.
An icon of the Holy Virgin from 1790 is believed to work miracles and draws many pilgrims on September 8. The wooden iconostasis inside displays over 100 saintly figures in elaborate 18th-century carving.
