The Upper Thracian Plain is an agricultural lowland positioned between the Sredna Gora mountains to the north and the Rhodopes to the south. The terrain spreads across a vast area used primarily for farming and livestock grazing.
The region was home to ancient Thracian civilization and later became a significant Roman province with preserved settlement remains. Archaeological finds reveal centuries of continuous habitation and multiple periods of rule.

The plain becomes very warm and dry during summer months, so light clothing and plenty of water are essential for visitors. Paths wind through farmland and villages where accommodations and food are readily available.
One village in this lowland recorded one of Europe's most extreme temperatures, showing how intensely the sun bears down here. This spot sits lower and hotter than most other regions in the country.
