Kokalyanski Urvich

Kokalyanski Urvich is a medieval fortress situated on Sredobardie Hill within the Lozen Mountain range, commanding the right bank of the Iskar River. The defensive walls reach approximately 6 meters in height and contain remains that suggest the scale of this former stronghold.

Construction began in the 13th century during the Second Bulgarian Empire as a control point for major trade and travel routes. This mountain position made it a defensive stronghold protecting settlements and river crossings in the region.

The church dedicated to Saint Elija within the fortress shows how residents expressed their faith through stone and construction. Religious buildings held central importance in the life of medieval communities that occupied this stronghold.

The site remains accessible year-round via hiking trails that begin from the village of Kokalyane and lead to the fortress. Visitors should prepare for uneven ground and potentially slippery sections, particularly after rain or wet weather.

The Iskar River makes a sharp turn through the mountain at this location, creating a distinctive natural feature of striking appearance. This landscape formation highlights why this exact spot was selected for a fortified stronghold.
