Krushuna Falls, Waterfall complex in Krushuna, Bulgaria
Krushuna Falls is a collection of cascades in northern Bulgaria where limestone-rich water flows over porous rock steps and leaves pale deposits behind. The individual falls spread across several levels, with water forming small pools and winding through moss and ferns.
Springs at this site have been flowing for centuries, slowly shaping the current travertine terraces through limestone deposits. Archaeologists found traces of Thracian settlements nearby, indicating that people knew this area since ancient times.
The springs that feed the waterfalls maintain a constant temperature year-round, which once attracted bathers to the site. Today, hikers use the constructed trails to reach different levels of the cascades and explore the surrounding area.
Wooden walkways run along the waterfalls and allow safe walking even when wet, while railings at steeper sections provide extra support. The terrain is uneven, so sturdy footwear and some caution when moving between levels is recommended.
The mineral-rich water stays relatively warm even in winter, causing the cascades to steam on cold days and ice crystals to form at the edges. This combination of flowing water and frozen rims attracts photographers during the colder months.
