Hotalich, Medieval fortress museum in Sevlievo, Bulgaria.
Hotalich is an ancient fortified settlement in Sevlievo with a stone citadel on elevated ground and expanded outer sections below. The site shows remains of residential buildings, defensive towers, and religious structures all built from stone.
Founded originally by Byzantines, the settlement was substantially rebuilt in the 10th century under Bulgarian rule with enhanced defensive systems. This transformation marked a shift in regional control and military strategy.
The site reveals two churches and remnants of a Byzantine basilica, showing how central religious life was to the settlement. These excavated structures provide insight into how people lived and organized themselves across different periods.
The site is walkable on foot, with paths leading to both levels from the lower residential areas up to the elevated citadel. Wear comfortable shoes as the ground is uneven and some paths pass through wooded areas.
Close to a hundred stone dwelling ruins stand tightly packed on the sloping ground, revealing how densely this medieval settlement was built. This tight clustering was necessary for protection and community within the fortified walls.
