Batoshevo Monastery of Assumption of Mary, Orthodox monastery in Batoshevo, Bulgaria.
Batoshevo Monastery of Assumption of Mary is an Orthodox monastic community near Sevlievo with traditional Bulgarian church architecture built from stone and wood. The complex contains a main church at its center with residential buildings arranged around it for the monks.
The monastery was established in 1246 under Michael II Asen's rule, making it one of the region's long-standing religious centers. It was severely damaged during Ottoman occupation and required major reconstruction around 1835.
Inside, you find an ornate wooden screen dividing the sanctuary, decorated with carved panels showing Creation stories made by craftsmen from a nearby artistic tradition. This carved woodwork reflects how religious art was developed and valued in the region.
You can visit throughout the year, and simple lodging is available if you want to stay overnight. The main religious celebration happens on August 15, when pilgrim numbers increase.
The outer vestibule holds preserved painted walls, while inside you see notable icons including the Archangel Michael and Christ Pantocrator. This combination of painted surfaces and religious imagery shows different artistic methods side by side.
