Sevеren Dzhendem

Severen Dzhendem is a nature reserve in the Balkan Mountains with expansive beech forests that host numerous native plants and animal species. The terrain covers mountainous ground with varied woodland types and wildlife at different elevations.

The area was protected because of its valuable beech forests and is now part of an international network of forest sites recognized for natural history importance. Different periods have shaped the region while these woodlands have remained largely unchanged in their natural composition.

The reserve holds meaning for local people as a source of traditional forest knowledge and wild plant gathering practices passed down through generations. These connections shape how nearby communities view and use the surrounding landscape.

Access to the reserve is through marked hiking trails reachable from Plovdiv with varying difficulty levels. Visitors should wear sturdy footwear and bring weather-appropriate clothing, particularly during spring and summer when trails are most accessible.

The reserve is part of a transnational protection network for ancient beech forests connecting several European countries and recognized as a World Natural Heritage site. This designation honors forest stands whose development has remained virtually unchanged over thousands of years.
