Vasil Levski, Historic monument in Karlovo, Bulgaria.
The Vasil Levski Monument in Karlovo stands on Vasil Levski Square between the churches of St. Nicholas and the Holy Mother. It shows Levski full-length with a revolver in his hand, a roaring lion beside him. The pedestal carries three reliefs: "Creation of the revolutionary committee", "The arrest of Levski" and "Taking Karlovo's rebels from the konak".
The foundation stone was laid on 15 May 1903 in the presence of Prince Regnant Ferdinand I, and the monument was completed in 1907 to a design by the sculptor Marin Vasilev. It commemorates Vasil Levski and the Karlovo residents who died in July and August 1877 during the fight for Bulgaria's liberation.
Three reliefs on the pedestal depict the creation of the revolutionary committee, the arrest of Levski, and the taking of Karlovo's rebels from the konak. The monument also lists the names of Karlovo citizens who died in July and August 1877 during the fight for Bulgaria's liberation.
The monument occupies the square between the churches of St. Nicholas and the Holy Mother, in the centre of Karlovo, and is reached on foot. The three reliefs sit on the lower part of the pedestal, below the list of names, so walk around the base to see them all.
The monument bears inscriptions honoring local citizens who died during the liberation conflicts of summer 1877. These names are carved directly into the memorial, making it a tribute to individuals rather than just a historical figure.
