Golam Kupen, Mountain summit in the Central Stara Planina, Bulgaria

Golam Kupen is a sharp rocky summit in the Kaloferska mountain of the Central Stara Planina, reaching 2,169 m. It has a typical alpine profile and is connected to the neighbouring Malak Kupen by a narrow saddle at 2,022 m. At the foot between the two peaks, at 1,945.5 m, lies Lokvata, the only high-mountain lake in Stara Planina. To the east the ridge narrows into the rocky Krasttsite crest.

Golam Kupen is a sharp rocky summit of 2,169 m in the Kaloferska planina of the Central Stara Planina, on the Dobrila hut to Botev peak traverse. To the west a narrow saddle at 2,022 m links it with Malak Kupen, and at the foot of the two peaks, at 1,945.5 m, lies Lokvata, the only high-mountain lake in the Stara Planina. Eastward the ridge narrows into the rocky Krastsite crest.

The peak stands on the Dobrila hut–Botev traverse, and the saddle linking it to Malak Kupen holds Lokvata, the only high-mountain lake in Stara Planina, at 1,945.5 m. The rocky ridge Krasttsite narrows east of the summit. The name kupan is a Bulgarian word for a stone block or heap.

From Ambaritsa hut the summit is reached in about 2 hours 30 minutes; the technically difficult sections are secured with a metal railing. If the weather turns, descend south to the trail for Vasil Levski hut. The peak lies on the Dobrila hut – Botev traverse, and a narrow 2,022 m saddle links it west with Malak Kupen.

Between Golam Kupen and its western neighbour Malak Kupen, a narrow saddle at 2,022 m drops to Lokvata, at 1,945.5 m the only high-mountain lake in Stara Planina. The lake sits at the foot of both peaks, a short detour from the Dobrila hut–Botev traverse.
