Golam Kupen

Golam Kupen is a summit in the Rila range reaching 2,169 meters in elevation. The peak has steep slopes on its north and south sides, with metal guide ropes installed on the eastern and western approaches to aid climbers.

This mountain served as a navigation landmark for medieval travelers crossing Bulgarian mountain regions along ancient trade routes. The established paths connected northern and southern territories and made the area an important passage point.

The summit draws Bulgarian mountaineers from different regions during summer months for traditional gatherings. These regular meetings have become a custom for people who come to explore the Rila range together.

Reaching this summit requires a two-day hike with overnight stays at mountain shelters such as Ambaritsa or Dobrila huts. Come prepared with proper equipment and fitness, as the routes are steep and demanding.

The small summit platform can hold only about ten people at once. On clear days, views stretch from the Danube Plain in the north all the way to the Rhodope Mountains in the south.
