Alibotoush, Biosphere reserve in Slavyanka mountains, Bulgaria
The reserve spans 1,638 hectares across varied terrain with altitudes ranging from 1,140 to 2,212 meters in the Blagoevgrad Province of Bulgaria.
The Bulgarian government established Alibotoush Reserve in 1951, and UNESCO designated it as a Biosphere Reserve in 1977 for its ecological importance.
The reserve contains substantial forests of Bosnian pine trees, which hold traditional significance for local communities in the Balkans region.
Visitors can access the reserve through Gotse Delchev city, following designated trails while maintaining environmental protection protocols throughout their exploration.
Scientists discovered Zeus olympius fungus within the reserve, marking only the second known location of this species after Mount Olympus in Greece.
