Alibotoush

Alibotoush is a nature reserve in the Slavyanka mountain range with forests, alpine meadows, and streams across different elevations. The terrain shifts between dense woodlands and open slopes, creating varied environments for walking and exploration.

The Bulgarian government established this reserve in 1951, and UNESCO recognized it as a Biosphere Reserve in 1977 for its ecological value. This designation marked its importance as a protected natural area in the country.

Bosnian pine forests dominate the landscape and shape how locals and visitors experience this mountain region. These trees have long been woven into the identity of the Balkans and remain central to the character of the place today.

The best time to visit is from May through September when weather is stable and trails are easier to navigate. Wear proper hiking boots and bring water and a map or guide, since mountain trails can be steep and remote in places.

A rare fungus called Zeus olympius grows here and is found in only a handful of places worldwide. This discovery connects the reserve to ancient Greek mountain sites and reveals the exceptional biological diversity hidden within these forests.
