Dikanya dam, Reservoir in Pernik Province, Bulgaria
Dikanya dam lies on the western slope of Verila mountain and holds back the Arkata River at an elevation of 709 meters (2326 feet). The reservoir spreads between wooded hillsides and serves mainly for irrigation.
The dam was built to supply irrigation to farmland in the Radomir valley. The facility helped expand agricultural use in this part of western Bulgaria.
Anglers visit the shores to catch carp or perch, while others enjoy the quiet above the water. The name Dikanya comes from a nearby village and is still used throughout the region.
You can reach the dam from Bobovdol in about 16 kilometers (10 miles) or from Sofia in 34 kilometers (21 miles). Cottages along the northern shore offer a place to stay overnight if you want to spend time near the water.
The area counts several smaller reservoirs nearby that form a network of water resources together. This system supplies western Bulgaria with freshwater for land and people.
