Duhlata, Natural cave in Vitosha Mountain, Bulgaria.
Duhlata is a cave system on Vitosha Mountain featuring six distinct levels with underground rivers, lakes, and numerous galleries spanning 18,200 meters. The extensive network of tunnels and chambers displays the geological complexity of this subterranean environment.
The cave received official protection status as a natural monument in 1962. This designation marked the start of concentrated preservation efforts in the region.
The name Duhlata comes from the whistling sounds made by wind at the entrance. Local people connected these sounds to the Bulgarian word 'duham', which means to whistle.
Access requires special permission from the Vitosha Nature Park Directorate and is restricted to researchers and experienced cavers. Visitors planning a trip should clarify entry conditions with the authorities beforehand.
The cave is home to 22 animal species, including the pseudoscorpion Neobisium kwartirnikovi, which is found nowhere else. This specialized fauna makes it a location of scientific interest for zoologists.
