Vitosha nature park

Vitosha Nature Park is a large protected mountainous area south of Sofia that encompasses forests, meadows, streams, and peaks. The terrain varies from gentle lower slopes suitable for leisurely walking to steeper upper reaches that challenge more experienced hikers.

The area received protected status in 1934, making it the first of its kind in the country. This early action for nature conservation set a standard for environmental protection across the broader region.

Local residents refer to the area as the city's green lung and use the forests for gathering mushrooms and berries, an age-old practice still common today. The place holds deep meaning in people's everyday lives as an accessible retreat from urban living.

The area is accessible from Sofia via public transportation at multiple entry points throughout the region. Wear sturdy footwear and bring water, as trails climb uphill through changing terrain and weather conditions vary by season.

The region contains numerous underground caves forming a hidden network beneath the mountains, with subterranean lakes and geological formations inside. This concealed system is difficult to access and often overlooked by most visitors who focus on the trails above ground.
