Aleko's waterfalls

Aleko's waterfalls consist of multiple water cascades flowing down the Skakavitsa River at elevations between 1011 and 1160 meters. The water drops over a series of rocky steps and natural pools, creating the formations hikers see today.

The waterfalls received their name in 1910, honoring Aleko Konstantinov, a Bulgarian writer who pioneered organized tourism in the country. This naming marked the site's recognition as part of Bulgaria's early tourism development.

The waterfalls serve as a favorite weekend destination for Sofia residents seeking time outdoors and nature photography. People come here to escape city life and experience the mountain environment firsthand.

Access is via a marked trail starting from the Dragalevtsi Monastery parking lot, with the full hike taking about three hours. Spring and autumn are the best seasons to visit, when water flow is strongest and weather conditions are mild.

The water flows in small steps over the rocks, and at certain points hikers can actually walk directly through the flowing water. This direct interaction with the falls creates a memorable and immersive experience during the hike.
