Historic center of Santana de Parnaíba, Colonial heritage district in Santana de Parnaíba, Brazil.
The historical center contains 209 colonial buildings constructed using traditional rammed earth and wattle-and-daub techniques dating from the 19th century.
The settlement began in 1561 when Portuguese explorer Manuel Fernandes Ramos established a base while searching for gold in this area known as Parnaíba.
The Passion Play during Holy Week attracts 35,000 visitors to the historical center, making it one of the largest religious performances in Brazil.
The municipal government invested one million reais in preservation projects, including restorations of the Anhanguera Museum and Monsignor Paulo Florêncio mansion.
The Arts and Crafts School Project, established in 1999, trains young people in historical construction techniques to maintain the colonial buildings.
