The Memorial Complex "Katyusha" in Orsha is a war memorial in Belarus built around an original rocket launcher mounted on a ZiS-6 truck. Eight concrete mortar forms stand around the vehicle, and a black information cube at the entrance explains the equipment on display.
On July 14, 1941, Soviet forces fired Katyusha rocket launchers in real combat for the first time near the village of Pishchalovo, close to Orsha. The memorial was built in 1966 by Belarusian architects to mark that event.
The name "Katyusha" comes from a popular Russian wartime song, which gives the site a personal quality that goes beyond a typical military display. People still visit to remember the fighting that took place just outside the city.
The site is open and easy to walk through, with the information cube serving as a good starting point. A visit does not take very long, so it pairs well with a broader walk around Orsha.
The rocket launcher at the center of the site is built from original wartime vehicle parts, not reproductions. This makes it a genuine artifact of the military technology used during that period.
