Belleville, Administrative municipality in Eastern Ontario, Canada
Belleville is a city on the north shore of the Bay of Quinte in Ontario, where the Moira River flows into Lake Ontario. The municipality stretches along the waterfront and connects several neighborhoods through a network of roads and residential areas.
The settlement was first called Singleton's Creek, then Meyer's Creek, before receiving its current name in 1816 after Lieutenant-Governor Sir Francis Gore's visit. The location at the junction of river and lake made the area a trading hub in the early history of eastern Ontario.
The Pinnacle Playhouse and Empire Theatre present theatrical productions and musical performances throughout the year, adding to the city's entertainment offerings.
The city sits directly on Highway 401, which offers connections to Toronto and Montreal, and is also served by VIA Rail regional trains. Local bus routes run through residential areas and connect the downtown core with surrounding neighborhoods.
The Glanmore National Historic Site displays a Victorian mansion from the 1880s with original furniture and fixtures. The rooms are arranged as they would have looked in the late 19th century and offer a view into the life of a wealthy family of that time.
