Haldimand County, rural municipality in Ontario, Canada

Haldimand County is a single-tier municipality in Ontario, Canada, that groups several small towns and rural communities under one local government. The county runs along the Grand River and reaches Lake Erie to the south, covering farmland, small urban centers such as Caledonia and Dunnville, and stretches of shoreline.

The Haudenosaunee peoples lived in this region long before European settlers arrived in the late 18th century, many of them United Empire Loyalists after the American Revolution. The current administrative form dates to 2001, when several smaller municipalities were merged into one single-tier county.

Haldimand County sits next to Six Nations of the Grand River, the largest First Nations reserve in Canada, and this proximity shapes much of the local identity. Many place names in the area trace back to Haudenosaunee language and history, which visitors can notice on road signs and local markers throughout the region.

The county is best explored by car, as distances between towns can be significant and public transit is limited outside the main centers. Road conditions and available services vary across the area, so it is worth checking local options before heading to more remote parts.

The county takes its name from Frederick Haldimand, a Swiss-born general who served as governor of Quebec in the late 18th century and granted land along the Grand River to Haudenosaunee Loyalists. That land grant, known as the Haldimand Tract, is still at the center of ongoing land rights discussions today.
