Newmarket, Administrative town in York Region, Canada
Newmarket is a town within the Regional Municipality of York in southern Ontario, north of Toronto. This settlement extends along the East Holland River and includes residential areas, commercial zones, and green spaces within the Greater Toronto Area.
Quaker families from Pennsylvania founded the settlement in 1801 along a trade route on the Holland River. During the 19th century, the place grew into a market town with mills, shops, and workshops serving nearby farms.
The main street retains the feel of a classic Ontario town center, where residents shop and meet at cafés and local stores. Along the East Holland River, walking paths and parks invite afternoon strolls when the weather allows.
Visitors reach the town center via Yonge Street or Davis Drive, where parking is available near shops and the riverfront. On weekends, the main street and shopping areas may become busier, especially during summer months.
The NewRoads Performing Arts Centre hosts theater and concerts in a modern hall located in the heart of the town. Many shows are designed for a local audience, but travelers can also attend evening performances if something is scheduled during their visit.
