James Bay Project, Hydropower project in Quebec, Canada
The James Bay Project is a hydroelectric complex in Quebec with multiple power stations positioned along the La Grande River. A network of dams and reservoirs captures water to generate electricity for the province.
Construction began in 1971 when Hydro-Quebec started redirecting rivers for power generation. This massive undertaking transformed the water landscape of northern Quebec.
The project emerged from negotiations with Cree and Inuit communities who have inhabited this region for generations. These agreements continue to shape relationships between local peoples and operators today.
Access to the facilities is limited as these are active industrial sites. Visitors should check ahead about which areas are open to the public.
The project triggered the relocation of Fort George village, which is now called Chisasibi. This entire community was rebuilt in a new location.
