Wiyâshâkimî Lake, Impact crater lake in Baie-d'Hudson, Canada.
Wiyâshâkimî Lake consists of two circular water bodies formed by separate asteroid impacts. Both basins sit within Tursujuq National Park in the Baie-d'Hudson region of Quebec.
Research between 1962 and 1964 confirmed these structures resulted from asteroid impacts through drilling and gravity surveys. The investigation revealed different geological properties within each basin.
The name comes from the Northern East Cree language and reflects how Indigenous peoples understood the water and its surroundings. It shows the deep connection between the land and those who lived here for centuries.
The site lies in Quebec's largest protected area and requires careful planning as it sits in a remote region. Access is best during warmer months when conditions allow for observation and research.
The western basin shows no meteorite material in its composition, while the eastern one displays evidence of chondritic matter. This difference makes each lake a distinct location for geological study.
