Louis-Babel Ecological Reserve

The Louis-Babel Ecological Reserve is located on René-Levasseur Island in northern Quebec and covers a large expanse of forested land across varying elevations. The terrain transitions from lower sections to higher mountain regions, creating different environments throughout the protected area.

The reserve was established in the early 1990s and named after a Canadian priest whose cartographic work advanced the exploration of the northern interior. This creation reflected efforts to protect important natural areas across the region.

The territory holds special importance for geological research due to its metamorphic structure resulting from a meteorite impact 210 million years ago.

The terrain includes various access points, with higher areas varying in accessibility depending on season and weather conditions. Visitors should prepare with suitable gear and be ready for changing conditions throughout the site.

The site shows traces of an ancient meteorite impact that transformed the rocks long ago, making it a rare geological location. Such shock-transformed areas are found at only a few places across Quebec.
