Fermont, Mining municipality in Côte-Nord region, Canada
Fermont is a mining town in the Côte-Nord region with a central protective wall structure about 1.3 kilometers long that houses apartments, shops, schools, and recreational facilities. This structure defines the townscape and provides residents with all necessary services in one compact area.
Quebec Cartier Mining Company founded Fermont in 1974 to support mining operations at the Mont Wright iron ore mine near the Quebec-Labrador border. The town was designed from the ground up specifically to meet the needs of mine workers and their families.
French is the main language spoken here, and residents come together for community events like the annual Taiga Carnival held each March.
The town is accessible via Route 389 from Baie Comeau, and visitors can also use flights to Wabush Airport in Labrador West. Its northern location means that planning for cold conditions and limited operating hours depending on the season is important.
Visitors arriving at the town will notice a large 200-ton Caterpillar 789A dump truck displayed at the entrance, which has logged more than 105,000 hours of operation. This vehicle stands as a remarkable reminder of the industry that built the town.
